Numeric Questions are a question type that let students respond with a number or mathematical answer. Responses are graded based on their mathematical value rather than exact formatting, so equivalent answers such as 0.5 and 1/2 can be recognized as correct. This helps improve automatic grading when students express the same answer in different ways.
How Numeric Questions Work
Numeric Questions let students enter a number or mathematical answer instead of selecting from predefined choices. When creating a Numeric Question, you can provide one or more answers that should be accepted as correct. Socrative recognizes equivalent ways of writing the same numeric value. For example:
Correct answer | Student response | Result |
|
| Correct |
|
| Correct |
|
| Correct |
|
| Correct |
Percentages are treated as the number entered. For example, 50% is treated as 50.
Multiple Correct Answers
You can add multiple accepted answers when a question has more than one possible correct response. A student only needs to provide one accepted answer for their response to be marked correct.
For example, Give a factor of 12 could accept 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 12.
Mathematical Expressions and Equations
Numeric Questions can also support mathematical expressions and equations. Students can use mathematical notation such as fractions, roots, powers, and functions when entering their response. Mathematically equivalent answers can be recognized as the same answer.
Answering a Numeric Question
Students enter their response directly into the Numeric Question answer field.
They can enter a plain numeric response or use mathematical symbols when more advanced notation is needed.
Grading Numeric Questions
Numeric responses are automatically graded against the correct answers provided by the teacher. Teachers can see whether responses are correct or incorrect in the live results as students answer.
Numeric Questions also support manual grading. After reviewing a response, teachers can adjust the result to:
Correct
Incorrect
Partially correct
This gives teachers the final say when a response demonstrates understanding but requires a grading adjustment.
Results and Reports
Numeric Questions are included alongside other question types throughout results and reporting.
Teachers can review:
Each student's response
Whether the response was marked correct or incorrect
Class results for the question
Any manually adjusted grades
Numeric Questions are also included when exporting quiz or assessment results to supported PDF and spreadsheet reports. Where Results Insights or Analyze Report is available, results from Numeric Questions can also be included in the analysis.
Availability and Access of Numeric Questions
Numeric Questions are a Pro feature. Free and Essentials users can explore Numeric Questions while editing a quiz, but a quiz containing a Numeric Question cannot be saved without the required plan. Numeric Questions are available in full quizzes and assessments only. They are not available as Quick Questions.
If your subscription changes
If a quiz containing Numeric Questions was created while you had access to the feature and your account is later downgraded:
You can continue to launch and use the existing quiz.
You can duplicate the entire quiz.
You can delete Numeric Questions from the quiz.
You cannot edit and save an existing Numeric Question without Pro.
You cannot duplicate an individual Numeric Question without Pro.
You cannot change another question type into a Numeric Question without Pro.
