With the Timer feature, Socrative Pro teachers can now set a time limit for their quizzes. This helps support fair assessments and can be used for formative, summative, or diagnostic quizzes.

Set Time Limits in Quizzes

Want your students to complete a quiz within a set amount of time? You can add a time limit when launching an activity if using the Instant Feedback or Open Navigation delivery settings. In Space Race, you can continue to set a countdown.

  1. Select your quiz.

  2. Click Launch.

  3. Choose either Instant Feedback or Open Navigation delivery method.

  4. Under Settings, enable Time limit.

  5. Enter a time (note that the default is 15 minutes and the duration goes up to 120 minutes).

  6. Start the activity.

💡A quiz's time limit can always be seen under the Delivery Settings of any Live Result or Report.

How Time Limits Work

  • The timer starts when a student joins into the activity.

  • Each student has their own timer.

  • When time runs out, the quiz will end automatically with a “time limit reached” message.

  • If a student is mid-response when the timer expires, their answer will not be submitted.

  • Teachers can pause the activity, which pauses all student timers.

  • After submission, hover over the timer icon beside a student's name in Live Results to view how long they took to complete the quiz. Show Timers toggle must be ON.

What your Students See

  • If enabled, students will see a countdown timer during the quiz.

  • Students are notified when:

    • 25% of time remains

    • Less than 10% remains or 1 minute is left (whichever comes first).

  • When time expires, their quiz is automatically submitted and closed and they will receive a message saying 'Time limit Reached'.

One-attempt vs. Multiple Attempts

Time limits behave differently depending on your launch settings:

If “One Attempt” is OFF:

  • The timer resets each time a student joins.

  • Students can retry with a fresh timer.

If “One Attempt” is ON:

  • The timer continues running, even if a student leaves.

  • This prevents students from restarting their quiz to gain extra time.

When to Use Time Limits

  • For Do Nows and other short form quizzes to keep responses quick and focused

  • Testing or Assessments where students need to answer in a set amount of time and pacing matters

  • For back-to-back classes to ensure quiz activities end on time

  • To reduce answer sharing between groups
