Use this guide to preview the student experience before launching a quiz, or share it with students and parents who want to know what to expect when using Socrative!
Joining a Room
To start a quiz in Socrative, students will first need to join the room where the activity was launched.
Option 1: Students can navigate to gosocrative.com in a web browser. There, they will be prompted to join an activity by entering the room name provided by the teacher. Teachers who would like to experience the student view for themselves can also visit gosocrative.com and try it firsthand!
Option 2: Students can scan a QR code provided by the teacher. This QR code can be accessed and shared by teachers after they launch the activity.
✍️ Students may be prompted to enter their name or Student ID if the teacher has this setting enabled.
If the teacher has not yet launched the quiz, students will be met with a Waiting Screen.
If a timer is enabled by the teacher, students will see how much time they are allotted to complete the quiz.
Completing a Quiz
When taking a quiz in Socrative, students are shown details that help them track their progress throughout the experience. These details may change depending on the type of quiz/activity and which settings were enabled by the teacher.
Quiz Navigation Progress
In activities with Open Navigation enabled, students can use the question navigation bar at the top of the screen to move between questions. The bar displays each question by number and question type. Question buttons are also color-coded to show whether a question has been answered, skipped, or not yet opened.
Timed activities will also display a timer with how much time is remaining for the student to complete the quiz.
In-line Feedback
In activities with Instant Feedback enabled, student responses are provided with in-line feedback that displays immediately after the question is answered. The correct response will be highlighted alongside the student's choice and the teacher's explanation, all in context with the question.
In-line Images
If a quiz question has any associated images, those images are shown side-by-side with the question details. This allows students to reference the image and question details at the same time without the need to switch between views. Students can also zoom-in or full-screen these images for clearer details on more complex diagrams.
Additional Options
Students can use their device's built-in screen reader or Voice-Over feature to have questions and answers read aloud (learn more).
Students can use the Hand Raise option to get the teacher's attention.
Submitting a Quiz
Depending on the quiz or activity type, students can submit their quiz by completing the final question or using the Submit Quiz button.
If students have any uncompleted questions, a prompt will appear to confirm which questions they have skipped. Students can then decide to submit or return to the quiz to complete these questions.
If students have completed all questions, they will instead be prompted to confirm submission or return to the quiz to make changes.
When students complete a quiz they will be presented a message confirming they have completed the activity.
Leaving a Room
When the quiz is finished, students can leave the room from in the Settings menu (accessed via the gear icon) in the top right corner of their screen. This will allow them to join a different room for another activity or rejoin the same room for another attempt at the quiz (if allowed by the teacher).
Teachers can also clear students from the room, if needed.
Between Activities
Students will see messages for each activity state they might encounter between quizzes and questions, like the following:
Waiting: The teacher has not yet started an activity in this room.
Paused: the teacher has paused the current quiz. A paused quiz will resume when the teacher chooses to unpause it.
Answer Submitted: When a quiz is launched in Teacher-Paced mode, students will wait for each question as the teacher controls progression through the quiz.
Completed: The quiz has been completed by the student and the teacher can review their responses and share results when ready.
Ended: The teacher has chosen to finish the activity.
Troubleshooting Common Access Problems
If students are unable to access a quiz or connect to a room, consider the following steps:
Verify the room name: Students need the room name from the teacher to join. Double check that the room name is correct, with no spelling errors.
Check the quiz status: If no quiz is currently launched, students will see a "waiting for your teacher to start an activity" screen.
Rostered rooms need a Student ID: If the room is rostered, students will need to enter the ID set by the teacher upon setting room set up (see Rosters).
Lost connection or accidentally closed the tab: Students can rejoin with the same name or ID and pick up where they left off!
Wrong language on the joining screen: Socrative rooms follow the web browser's language. Students can change their web browser's language settings if needed. Quiz content will always appear in the language used by the teacher when creating the quiz.
