Using 'Spoken Content' in Socrative

Turn text into speech with the iPad's built-in feature

Written by Carlina Drescher

If you are looking to use a text-to-speak function, you can do so using your iPad or Mac (any Apple laptop or desktop computer running macOS).

On your iPad, you will first need to enable 'Spoken Content' in your iPad settings. To do this:

  • Launch “Settings”

  • Tap on “Accessibility”

  • Open “Spoken Content”

  • Slide “Speak Selection” ON.

You can then adjust the speaking speed rate and Preferred Voices, if desired.

Once you have enabled this feature on your device, open the Socrative App and navigate to your quiz. Hold your screen down to highlight where you would like to begin and select “Speak” from the pop-up menu. Your content can then be read aloud with the tap of a button!

Similarly, on your Mac:

  • Highlight the wording you would like to be read out loud

  • Right-click the highlighted section

  • Click "speech"

  • Click "start speaking"

    Using Apple VoiceOver

Socrative works with built-in operating system screen readers such as Apple VoiceOver. Screen readers provide navigation and narration, meaning they can read on-screen text and interface elements aloud and help users move through items such as questions, buttons, and answer choices.

    On iPhone or iPad

    To enable VoiceOver:

    1. Open Settings

    2. Tap Accessibility

    3. Tap VoiceOver

    4. Turn VoiceOver on

Once enabled, VoiceOver will read out items on the screen and allow users to navigate the interface using standard VoiceOver controls.

    On Mac

    To enable VoiceOver:

    1. Open System Settings

    2. Go to Accessibility

    3. Select VoiceOver

    4. Turn VoiceOver on
